Intimacy and Arthritis

Sexuality is a phenomenon of all ages of life. In the narrow sense of the word, it includes the ability to reproduce, sex drive and sexual pleasure. In the broad sense of the word, it defines us as male or female. It accompanies us in sickness and in health.

Sexuality is a concern to people with arthritis, regardless of their age or gender, from the 65-year-old man who just had hip replacement surgery to the 30-year-old woman who is worried about her ability to conceive because of the medications she is taking.

Sexuality is a private matter that people have difficulty talking about. Thus, although surveys show that 40% of people living with arthritis would like to be helped with their sexual problems, most of them remain silent, and only 15% will talk about them spontaneously.
